Five-Element Theory
Each bodily organ is associated
with one of the five elements in Chinese medicine: fire, earth, metal,
water, and wood. The five-element theory focuses on the condition of
each organ, whether it is in or out of balance, and also the interrelationship
between different organs. In chronic disease, the imbalance often involves
more than one organ. The theory suggests that one imbalanced organ can
adversely affect other organs, as when one upset family member can cause
the other family members to become upset.
